Sweden’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) says its national project on AI-driven cyber threats will continue. Funding for the next phase has been secured, and planning for 2027 is starting.
— In six months, we have gone from an open question to prioritised initiatives. Now we roll up our sleeves and make this way of working permanent, said NCSC head John Billow.
The project began in April 2026. The NCSC coordinates it, and AI Sweden manages it with funding from Vinnova. Experts from government agencies, industry, research and the Swedish Armed Forces have taken part.
According to the NCSC, the first six months produced several initiatives on using the most advanced AI models against cyber threats. They include support for detecting and responding to threats. Others cover tools for finding vulnerabilities in systems and software, and security reviews of AI models released on the market.
The NCSC says research, innovation and development ran in parallel rather than in sequence.
In July, the government tasked the NCSC with coordinating national cybersecurity work linked to AI, as previously reported by NDS. The NCSC is part of the National Defence Radio Establishment (FRA).
