The Swedish Government has tasked the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) at the Swedish Defence Radio Authority (FRA) with coordinating and strengthening national efforts on cybersecurity related to artificial intelligence (AI). The assignment includes, among other things, coordination against AI-driven cyber threats and a new role as a contact point for companies developing advanced AI models.
According to a press release from the Swedish Government, the NCSC is to coordinate, together with relevant authorities, the work of preventing, detecting, and countering AI-driven cyber threats. The assignment covers analyses of risks, vulnerabilities, and dependencies linked to advanced AI models, as well as identifying the need for measures. The NCSC will also coordinate Sweden's work in relevant international and European forums from a cybersecurity perspective, and serve as a contact point for companies developing advanced AI models.
"The Government is currently carrying out a comprehensive billion-krona investment to strengthen cybersecurity across society, with the National Cyber Security Centre at the heart of this work. The advance of AI models now compels us to accelerate our efforts on cybersecurity issues even further," says Carl-Oskar Bohlin, Minister for Civil Defence, in the Government's press release.
In a press release from the National Cyber Security Centre, the authority states that it sees a natural role for itself in coordinating cybersecurity-related issues linked to AI.
"The National Cyber Security Centre has, within its national mandate, a natural role in coordinating cybersecurity-related issues connected to AI. Developments place demands on authorities and organisations to act together to ensure that not least our societally important and critical operations have adequate protection. We look forward to broad collaboration in the new assignment we have been given," says John Billow, Head of the NCSC, in the authority's press release.
The assignment is to be reported verbally to the Government Offices no later than 13 November 2026.
