At the request of Finland, Sweden is sending the submarine rescue ship HMS Belos to the Gulf of Finland to assist with investigations of the damaged cables between Finland and Estonia. The ship, equipped for advanced underwater operations, can conduct diving operations using a wet diving bell and underwater vehicles.

– Sweden has the capability, willingness, and opportunity to contribute with the requested expertise, and it is therefore natural for us to participate. This type of challenge is best managed together, says Navy Chief Johan Norlén in an article on the Swedish Armed Forces' website.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) emphasised the importance of supporting neighbouring countries in a time of security policy challenges.

– There is a serious security policy situation, and we want to strengthen security and cooperation with neighbours and allies. It is natural for the Swedish Armed Forces to contribute their unique expertise so that Finland can clarify what has happened, says Kristersson in a press release from the Government Offices of Sweden.
