Sweden Purchases Man-Portable Air Defense from Poland
Sweden has ordered the Polish air defense system PIORUN for three billion kronor. The system will enhance the army's air defense capability.
The PIORUN weapon system is developed to combat aerial targets such as drones, helicopters, and aircraft at a distance of up to 6.5 kilometers. It is carried and operated by individual soldiers and, according to FMV, will primarily be supplied to the army's units. Deliveries will begin in the first quarter of 2026 and are expected to be completed by 2027.
– In a short time, we have procured a weapon system that is new for the Armed Forces, and it will significantly contribute to strengthening air defense capability in the units, says Christer Mellgren, project manager at FMV, in the press release.
FMV signed a letter of intent with the supplier in March 2025 and followed up with an initial smaller order in July of the same year. The current deal includes the main delivery.
