The Swedish government submitted a bill to the Riksdag on 13 October 2026. If approved, it would let the government deploy land, naval and air units to NATO’s deterrence and defence during 2027.
– NATO now faces a shift where Europe takes much greater responsibility for its own security. Sweden is taking its responsibility in that shift, said Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard.
Ground forces would go to NATO’s Forward Land Forces in Finland, where Sweden is framework nation, and in Latvia. Naval units would join NATO’s maritime forces. Air units and ground-based air defence would contribute to NATO’s integrated air and missile defence.
– By contributing military units to NATO’s common defence, we strengthen the alliance’s ability to defend its member states, said Defence Minister Pål Jonson.
According to the government, Sweden plans to deploy the Patriot air defence system to NATO’s air defence mission in Poland in December 2026. It intends to keep Patriot there in spring 2027, subject to the Riksdag’s approval.
Writing on X, Stenergard added:
– Through our military contributions on land, in the air and at sea, we put our alliance policy of solidarity into practice. It strengthens our own security and that of all of NATO.
The bill also covers units for other operations that may arise during the year. The government proposed Sweden’s first such contribution for 2025, as previously reported by NDS.
