According to the Swedish Armed Forces' (Försvarsmakten) annual report for 2025, the Swedish war organisation continues to expand through increased personnel and materiel. During the year, integration into NATO has deepened with troop contributions in Latvia and naval presence in the Baltic Sea, while the number of wartime placements increased by 24 percent.

– 2025 has been a year with high demands on the Swedish Armed Forces. As an ally in NATO, the defence of Sweden is inseparable from the defence of the alliance, says Michael Claesson, Supreme Commander.

According to a press release from the Swedish Armed Forces, the agency has received several important materiel deliveries over the past year. The deliveries include mortar armoured vehicles, a new portable air defence system, and the submarine HMS Halland, which has now undergone its mid-life modification.

Meanwhile, the first fighter division has begun rearming to the JAS 39 Gripen E. The agency notes that a significant portion of the materiel acquisition consists of replacements for the equipment donated to Ukraine.

On the international stage, Swedish personnel have participated in NATO's standing forces and sent 350 instructors to train Ukrainian soldiers. Additionally, the army conducted its first field exercise on foreign soil when troops were moved to Finland for training activities.

During 2025, 8,136 conscripts were enlisted, and the number of employees amounted to 30,442 individuals by the end of the year. A total of 863 individuals began officer training, which is the highest number in a single year in the 21st century.
