The Finnish defence technology company Sensofusion has acquired aircraft manufacturer Atol Aviation. According to the company, the acquisition strengthens its capability to develop and produce airborne systems for drone detection.
According to a press release from Sensofusion, the deal encompasses Atol Aviation, described as Finland's only aircraft manufacturer. Through the acquisition, Sensofusion gains both production capacity and expertise in aircraft development, with operations at a former airbase in Hall, in the town of Jämsä (central Finland).
Atol Aviation has developed the Atol Aurora and Atol Protector aircraft, intended for government and defence-related applications. According to the press release, airborne sensor systems offer greater range than ground-based solutions, as signals are not limited by terrain or built-up areas. Tuomas Rasila, Chief Executive Officer of Sensofusion, states in the press release: "Signal dominance cannot be achieved from the ground alone, and furthermore, radio transmitters on the ground are more easily detected from the air."
Sensofusion states that the company plans to begin production of new products in Hall, as well as expand operations and recruit additional staff.
Anssi Rekula, Chief Executive Officer of Atol Aviation, states in the press release: "This is a major step forward for Atol Aviation. Together with Sensofusion, we have a clear synergy in expertise and execution."
According to the company, the acquisition forms part of a strategy to develop capabilities for drone detection and signals intelligence, where airborne platforms can complement existing systems. The purchase price has not been disclosed.
