Norway Expands Drone Support to Ukraine

The Norwegian government plans to support Ukraine with over 12 billion NOK in 2026, with a particular focus on drone technology. The support was announced by Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre during a visit to Kyiv on the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion.

“We are in close dialogue with Ukrainian authorities on how we can best design Norway's support to Ukraine, and drones are among the most crucial for Ukrainians in their defence struggle against Russian attacks,” says Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

According to a press release from the Norwegian government, the funding outlines the direction for military support within the Nansen Programme for 2026.

During the stay in Kyiv, Jonas Gahr Støre and Ukraine's Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov visited the Lazar Group, a unit within the Ukrainian National Guard. The delegation observed an operational deployment and met with drone pilots to learn from their combat experiences.

The visit also included meetings with the Ukrainian defence industry. The Prime Minister visited Fire Point, a manufacturer of long-range attack drones and the FP-5 Flamingo cruise missile. The company continuously develops technology based on operational needs, and according to the Norwegian government, Fire Point collaborates with Norwegian Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace. Representatives from the Norwegian company were also present during the visit.

“Drones and autonomous systems have changed the dynamics on the battlefield, and Norway should be at the forefront in developing and implementing new technology,” says Defence Minister Tore O. Sandvik.

The Defence Minister further states that Ukraine offers unique insights into modern warfare. The government recently launched a new drone strategy for the defence sector, and experiences from Ukraine are described as central to future Norwegian technology development.

NDS has previously reported on various new drone agreements that Ukraine has concluded with NATO countries, including Finland, Denmark, and Latvia.
