NATO Establishes Signal Company in Enköping
NATO will establish a signal company in Enköping, Sweden, as part of a new geographical structure. The unit will be led by NATO but staffed by Swedish officers and soldiers.
The signal company will become part of NATO's new geographical structure, where Sweden, along with other Nordic countries, is included in a new operational area – Joint Operations Area Northwest. Within this area, a new signal battalion will be established, with headquarters in Denmark.
According to the Swedish Armed Forces, the Swedish signal company will constitute a so-called Deployable CIS Module (DCM), and be part of a NATO Signal Battalion (NSB). The company's task will be to establish and operate command support systems in a field environment, including internet and satellite communications.
– That Sweden is given responsibility for one of NATO's signal companies is a clear trust and an important part of our continued integration into the alliance, says Brigadier General Mattias Hanson in a press release from the Swedish Armed Forces.
The signal company will be the second NATO structure to be established in Enköping, which Defense Sector News previously reported on. Last week, the government tasked the Swedish Armed Forces with offering NATO the establishment of a logistics headquarters in Enköping – Joint Logistic Support Group Headquarters North West (JLSG HQ NW).
– NATO presence in Sweden strengthens Swedish security and deterrence. The logistics function contributes to facilitating the defense of NATO's northern flank, said Defense Minister Pål Jonson (M).
