The Swedish government is initiating a new investigation to shorten lead times in the construction of military properties. The aim is to eliminate bureaucratic obstacles and more rapidly strengthen total defence. The assignment is to be reported by February 2027.
– The expansion of the defence needs to proceed more quickly. In some cases, it can take up to a decade to establish regiments and facilities. This is completely unreasonable in these serious times, says Defence Minister Pål Jonson in the government's communiqué.
He emphasises that regulatory simplifications are necessary for Sweden to effectively meet the threat from Russia. The new investigation is tasked with analysing what in the planning and building processes causes delays.
The investigator is to examine, among other things, whether a simplified and uniform standard for building permit information can be applied by the country's municipalities regarding typical military buildings.
– In the current security situation, one of the government's main priorities is to rapidly build military capability, and this applies to both personnel and materiel, says Infrastructure and Housing Minister Andreas Carlson.
He notes that functioning infrastructure is a fundamental prerequisite for the operations of the military defence. The investigation is to be reported no later than 28 February 2027.
