The government has decided to assign the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration to coordinate the Swedish-Ukrainian cooperation in defence innovation.

FMV, in collaboration with other authorities and relevant actors, is to establish a structure for continued innovation cooperation with Ukraine, the government states in a press release. The assignment includes collaborating with, among others, the Swedish Armed Forces, FOI, FRA, and the Swedish Defence University, as well as industry actors connected to defence innovation.

– Sweden can learn a lot from Ukraine in the field of defence innovation. The assignment is part of the effort to make Sweden's defence more innovative, effective, and modern, says Minister for Defence Pål Jonson (M) in the press release.

The government emphasises that technological development on the battlefield is accelerating and that structured collaboration is important to quickly link military needs to potential solutions.

The cooperation is part of a broader Swedish-Ukrainian initiative in the defence industrial area. On 23 August, Pål Jonson and Ukraine's Minister of Defence Denys Shmyhal signed a declaration of intent for joint production of defence materiel. The aim is to combine Swedish industrial capacity with Ukrainian innovation and experience from the war, particularly in areas such as autonomous systems and electronic warfare.
