On 25 March, the first Gripen E fighter aircraft manufactured in Brazil was presented. The ceremony took place at Embraer's industrial complex in Gavião Peixoto, São Paulo state. Among the attendees were Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Saab's CEO Micael Johansson, and representatives from the Brazilian Air Force.
– The delivery of the first Gripen produced in Brazil represents much more than the completion of an aircraft; it symbolises the strength of a partnership built on trust, a long-term vision, and genuine collaboration. We are extremely proud of what we have achieved side by side with our Brazilian partners, says Saab's CEO and President Micael Johansson in a press release.
Saab states that production takes place in Gavião Peixoto, Brazil, supported by both a Brazilian and an international supply chain. According to the current agreement, an additional 14 aircraft are to be produced in Brazil following the same model.
Before delivery to the Brazilian Air Force, the aircraft will undergo testing and flight trials. It will then join the already delivered aircraft at the airbase in Anápolis. The agreement between Brazil and Saab was signed in 2014 and encompasses a total of 36 aircraft, of which 28 are single-seat and eight are two-seat. Deliveries began in 2020, and so far, 11 aircraft have been handed over.
In a post published on X, Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva describes how he was escorted by the Gripen E aircraft, which is the first domestically produced aircraft.
– I flew escorted by the first Gripen manufactured in Brazil. A very symbolic moment that shows a country that believes in itself, invests in technology, and affirms its sovereignty, he writes.
The production line for the Gripen E was inaugurated in 2023, with Lula da Silva and the Minister for Civil Defence Carl-Oskar Bohlin present at the inauguration. In 2024, NDS reported how Sweden and Brazil have deepened their aviation cooperation, where Sweden would purchase transport aircraft from Embraer while Brazil increases its order of the JAS 39 Gripen.
