Soldiers from the Jutland Dragoon Regiment have trained with Short Range Training Ammunition (SRTA) in the area behind their barracks in Holstebro, the Danish Defence Command said on 7 October.
The SRTA rounds are fired from the soldiers' standard M/25 rifle. Small grooves in the tip make the bullet spin, which breaks its normal trajectory. It drops to the ground after roughly 400 metres. Up to that point it can cause the same damage as standard live ammunition, according to Danish Defence.
Standard live rounds need a 3,200-metre safety distance. Because of that, regiments have had to book time at Denmark's larger ranges. Until now, the Holstebro area was only used for blank ammunition.
— It means we can train more often without having to take other regiments' training needs into account, says Casper, an operations NCO with the regiment.
SRTA is meant to supplement blank and live ammunition, not replace them, the Danish Defence said. The M/25 is Denmark's new service rifle, with nearly 50,000 on order from Colt Canada, as previously reported by NDS.
