The crew aboard the Danish inspection ship Thetis is taking part in the annual exercise Nanook Tuugaalik, which the Danish Defence describes as the Canadian Armed Forces' largest maritime exercise in the Arctic. The exercise is being conducted together with units from Canada, France and the United States.
The first 14 days of the exercise took place in Canadian waters, after which the final phase takes place in Greenlandic waters under the command of the Joint Arctic Command. According to the Danish Defence, the Greenlandic phase includes exercise scenarios for search and rescue operations, environmental preparedness, fisheries inspections, protection of critical infrastructure, and detection and denial of access.
"The exercise provides good opportunities to train our ability to operate together under the unique Arctic conditions," says Major General Søren Andersen, commander of the Joint Arctic Command in Nuuk, Greenland.
The exercise concludes with a port visit to Nuuk (Greenland's capital).
