José Múcio is said to have mentioned that Brazil is looking to sell three to four aircraft. The Swedish Armed Forces currently have six Tp 84 units, all stationed at F 7 in Såtenäs. The aircraft are regularly used to support the Swedish Armed Forces' daily operations as well as in special operations such as evacuations from Kabul and Sudan.
On 11 September, Defence Minister Pål Jonson and the Tidö parties' defence policy spokespersons held a press conference to present budget news in the defence area before the government was to submit the budget proposal to the parliament. Mikael Oscarsson (KD) then stated that the issue of the Tp 84 is something that can "be resolved in the near future."
On 20 September, the government submitted the budget proposal for 2024 to the parliament.
In expenditure area 6, Defence and Society's Crisis Preparedness, it states that "Tp 84 [...] is outdated and has limited availability. To maintain the capability for tactical air transport, the aircraft system needs to be replaced." The text continues to describe how important transport flight capability is, which is why procurement needs to occur "urgently."
Whether the C-390 is referred to is not clear in the proposal. In a comment to Defence Sector News, the Defence Minister said:
"Sweden and Brazil are strategic partners and regularly engage in discussions at the political level. A visit by Brazil's Defence Minister is planned, and we will provide more information closer to the time. Since Sweden and Brazil already collaborate on aviation, it is a natural topic that may be discussed."
In addition to Brazil, Portugal and Hungary have already ordered the C-390 from Embraer. Last year, the Netherlands also chose Embraer's C-390 Millennium to replace the country's four C-130H, but has not yet signed an order. The country's Ministry of Defence reached the conclusion after a comparison between the C-390M and the new C-130J. Last week, Reuters reported that Austria now also intends to purchase the Brazilian transport aircraft. The news agency writes that Austria's Defence Minister Klaudia Tanner has stated that the country is conducting negotiations with the Netherlands to place its order together with the Netherlands' upcoming one.
The ties between Brazil and Sweden have been increasingly strengthened on the material side. In May, the Minister for Civil Defence, Carl-Oskar Bohlin, visited the country to, together with President Lula da Silva, inaugurate a test and production facility for Saab Gripen E, which Defence Sector News reported on.
