Karlskoga, Sweden – 25 August 2026 – The Swedish Armed Forces have formally received ARCHER 8x8 self-propelled howitzers from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) during a ceremony at the Villingsbergs firing range today, marking an important step in strengthening Sweden’s long-range artillery capabilities.
This step is the result of close cooperation between BAE Systems, FMV and the Swedish Armed Forces,” said Lena Gillström, CEO of BAE Systems Bofors. “Seeing the ARCHER systems formally handed over is proof of our shared commitment to strengthening Sweden’s long-range artillery capabilities. I am very proud of everyone who has contributed to reaching this point. This milestone paves the way for further deliveries.
In 2023, Sweden placed a $500 million contract with BAE Systems for 48 new ARCHER artillery systems, followed in 2025 by an additional order for 18 systems as part of Sweden’s military support package. The four systems handed over at Villingsberg are the first delivered under this programme.
BAE Systems’ ARCHER 8x8 is a next-generation wheeled artillery system designed to keep pace with rapidly manoeuvring land forces, combining high tactical mobility with long-range precision fires and enhanced crew protection.
