Volvo Defence selects NP Aerospace for armoured cabs for Volvo FMX trucks
NP Aerospace has been awarded a contract by Volvo Defence to develop armoured cabs for Volvo FMX trucks. These cabs will meet NATO's protection requirements and will be showcased at the DSEI defence exhibition.
The contract was won through a procurement process in October last year. Since then, NP has developed a solution for fully protected truck cabs that meet specific requirements according to NATO STANAG 4569 and AEP-55 for protection against, among other things, explosions and shrapnel from artillery shells. The minimum requirement for standard armour is STANAG level 2 with the possibility to upgrade to STANAG level 3 with additional protection, according to the company.
The truck cab was showcased by Volvo Defense at the DSEI defence exhibition in London. In a post on LinkedIn, the company calls the innovation industry-leading.
– The ability to offer STANAG level 3 protection on a single front axle truck is an industry-leading innovation. We believe this provides modularity and flexibility that will meet the end customers' requirements while offering space for CBRN ventilation systems, radio equipment, and WRM systems. We are pleased to partner with Volvo Defense in composite armour. It is a significant step for both companies as we expand our capabilities in armoured truck cab programmes, says Peter Hardisty, Managing Director & Senior Vice President at NP Aerospace to the company.
The truck cabs will be fully integrated by NP Aerospace at their facility in Coventry before being delivered to Volvo Defense in Gothenburg for final integration. NP Aerospace will conduct ballistic tests of the solution later this year, before starting prototype development for Volvo Defense, which will test them in 2024. NP Aerospace will fully support Volvo Defense in their global sales opportunities for the protected Volvo FMX truck family, writes NP.
– We chose NP Aerospace because of their expertise in the design and manufacture of vehicle armour, which they have gained by working with many complex vehicle programmes in collaboration with major defence organisations. We look forward to presenting our first prototype of a composite armoured truck cab at DSEI, the result of hard work and dedication from both teams over the past ten months to meet an ambitious timeline, says Roger Brorsson, Product Director at Volvo Defense in the statement.
