A pilot round of the Drone Warfare Awareness Course (DWAC) has been conducted at Swedint (the Swedish Armed Forces International Centre, based in Södertälje, Sweden). According to the Swedish Armed Forces (Försvarsmakten), NATO's Requirement Authority has proposed that the course be certified as a NATO Selected course, which would make it the alliance's first certified drone course.
According to a press release from the Swedish Armed Forces, DWAC has been jointly developed by the Ukrainian International Peacekeeping and Security Centre (IPSC) and Swedint. The course aims to increase understanding of how drones affect modern warfare and the consequences they have for both friendly and adversary forces.
If the certification is approved, the course will also become the first Ukrainian-developed course to be certified within NATO, according to the Swedish Armed Forces.
One of the course participants was Major Christoffer Bergman, fires commander at the 7th Brigade.
"First-hand information is essential, and here it is up to date. They can tell you what happened last week," he says in the Swedish Armed Forces press release.
The Swedish Armed Forces state that the organisation has ordered a mobile version of DWAC, to be delivered during the autumn. The course is subsequently planned to be conducted at the NATO-Ukraine Joint Analysis, Training and Education Centre (JATEC) in Poland.
