Tobias Thyberg Appointed New National Security Advisor

Tobias Thyberg has been appointed as the new national security advisor and assumes the position immediately. He has previous experience as an ambassador and director within the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.

The government has appointed Ambassador Tobias Thyberg as the new National Security Advisor and head of the function for national security in the Prime Minister's Office. He assumes the position today, May 8.

Thyberg has previously served as ambassador in Ukraine, Afghanistan, and in the EU's delegation in Georgia. He has also served at the Swedish embassies in Moscow, Washington DC, and New Delhi. Most recently, he was the head of Eastern Europe and Central Asia at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. Tobias Thyberg completed his military service through studies in Russian at the National Defence Radio Establishment (FRA).

– In a time of multiple parallel threats to our country, the coordination and direction of Sweden's national security is central. When I was asked to lead this work, it was obvious for me to accept. Now I look forward to starting the job, says Tobias Thyberg in a press release from the Government Offices.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) justifies the appointment with Thyberg's experience in security and foreign policy, including his time as ambassador in Ukraine at the outbreak of war in 2022.

– Ambassador Tobias Thyberg has unique knowledge and qualifications to coordinate and direct the government's work with Sweden's national security, assist me as Prime Minister in security policy matters, and represent Sweden in the international network of security advisors. I look forward to working with Tobias, who is making his first trip in his new role today to the JEF meeting in Oslo, says the Prime Minister.

The appointment follows after Henrik Landerholm in January 2025 left the position. Landerholm, who was the first person to hold the role, resigned after a preliminary investigation was initiated regarding the handling of classified documents. He had held the assignment since November 2022 and played a key role in the establishment of the national security council, which coordinates issues between the Government Offices and authorities such as the Swedish Armed Forces, FRA, and the Security Service.
