According to a press release on the government's website, Sweden's membership in NATO will entail a profound and immediate change in Sweden's foreign and security policy. In light of this, the government has presented an additional foreign policy declaration.
– Membership in NATO will constitute a cornerstone of Sweden's foreign and security policy. Sweden shall be a credible, reliable, and solidaristic ally, says Foreign Minister Tobias Billström in the press release.
As a member of NATO, Sweden will engage in all of NATO's core tasks: deterrence and collective defence, crisis management, and security cooperation.
– We shall continue to promote fundamental values in Swedish foreign and security policy, which means standing up for international law, human rights, and gender equality, and being a strong voice for arms control, disarmament, and non-proliferation, says the Foreign Minister.
Sweden will also safeguard and promote transatlantic cooperation and work for the continued engagement of the United States in Europe, as well as contribute to the security of the entire NATO in accordance with the alliance's 360-degree approach.
