The Swedish government has decided to construct the Bergslagen Artillery Regiment (A 9) in Kristinehamn (western Sweden) at a maximum cost of approximately 6.5 billion Swedish kronor. The construction will be carried out by the Swedish Fortifications Agency (Fortifikationsverket) and will commence in stages between 2027 and 2030.
The government states that the Swedish Fortifications Agency (Fortifikationsverket) in April 2026 requested approval for investment in ground infrastructure and the full construction of the new regiment. Until the permanent facility in Kristinehamn is completed, operations will be conducted in temporary premises in the area.
"When the government took office, work began on rebuilding Swedish defence. Expanding regiments is a central part of strengthening the foundation of military capability in Sweden and our national security for the long term," says Minister for Financial Markets Niklas Wykman.
The Swedish Fortifications Agency (Fortifikationsverket) is required to provide ongoing updates to the Government Offices on the progress of the investment. A final report is to be submitted on 30 August 2029.
The Swedish Parliament (Riksdagen) decided in December 2020 to re-establish the Bergslagen Artillery Regiment (A 9) in Kristinehamn as part of the broader rebuilding of Swedish defence capability. The regiment was formally reopened in 2022, having been disbanded in 2000.
