Terror Threat Level Raised: Säpo Consulted with FRA and MUST
The Swedish Security Service has raised the terror threat level in Sweden from elevated to high. The decision is strategic and long-term, impacting the entire society.
– My decision is based on assessments that Säpo continuously makes, where analyses from the National Center for Terror Threat Assessment (NCT) and the work of the Security Service's counterterrorism operations are important parts. Before making the decision, I also consulted with the head of MUST and the director-general of FRA, said Säpo chief Charlotte von Essen during the press conference.
The decision to raise the terror threat level is not due to any single event but should be seen in a strategic and long-term perspective. The development of events with threats directed at Sweden over a longer period is serious and affects Sweden's security, writes Säpo in a press release.
– The increase in the terror threat level is primarily intended as a signal to all societal actors that the threats we see are serious, and the importance of taking necessary measures to reduce the risk of terrorist attacks occurring. The assessment underlying the decision is that the Security Service can ascertain that we are in a deteriorated situation regarding attack threats against Sweden and that this threat will persist for a longer time.
Assessments according to the threat level scale:(1) No identified threat
(2) Limited threat
(3) Elevated threat
(4) High threat
(5) Very high threat
The Armed Forces also raise the terror threat level from three to four on a five-point scale. The Armed Forces' terror threat level only covers the agency's operations. The agency thus follows the Security Service's assessment that there is a threat to the entire society and that this will persist for a longer time, writes the Armed Forces in a press release.
– Our raising of the terror threat level is not prompted by any specific threat against the Armed Forces or its personnel. The Security Service's assessment is that the terror threat has generally increased for the entire society, and the Armed Forces need to adapt their operations accordingly, says Lieutenant General Thomas Nilsson, C MUST, in the press release.
