The Swedish Armed Forces and FMV have signed an agreement with Saildrone for the drones. The Swedish Navy will show four uncrewed sailing drones from US company Saildrone in Nynäshamn on 22 October.

The agreement was developed within NORDEFCO, the Nordic defence cooperation. According to the Armed Forces, other Nordic countries can also sign agreements based on their own needs.

The Armed Forces describe the arrangement as a service. Saildrone’s own staff monitor the ten-metre drones. They have been in use since October 2026. They gather information on vessels moving in the Baltic Sea and add to the Navy’s picture of activity at sea.

The drones also contribute to NATO’s Task Force X Baltic, which began as part of Operation Baltic Sentry.

Defence Minister Pål Jonson and Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer will attend, the government said. The Navy’s chief of operations, Captain Paula Wallenburg, will also take part.

Denmark began testing Saildrone systems in its own waters last year. Danish officials said they needed to settle data collection, sensor choice and legal frameworks before deciding whether to buy.
