Sweden's Defence Commission now has until 29 April 2027 to submit its final report. Defence Minister Pål Jonson moved the original deadline of 20 November 2026 on 2 October, the government announced.

According to the government, the final report will cover the areas set out in the commission's February 2026 instructions. These include following up the 2024 total defence decision and Sweden's NATO obligations. The commission is also tasked with proposing how to remove obstacles to growing the military wartime organisation. It must also assess protection needs for critical infrastructure.

The final report will not serve as the basis for a new defence decision, the government said. Its purpose is to follow up the current one.

Left Party MP Hanna Gunnarsson, a member of the Riksdag's Committee on Defence, welcomed the decision on X.

— It is crucial for a good result that there is ample time for discussions in the commission, she wrote.

The commission presented its interim report, "Skärpt läge", on 12 June 2026. That report updated the security policy assessment and gave a status report on both civil and military defence.
