The Swedish Parliament's War Delegation convened on 28 November for an exercise, according to a press release from the Swedish Parliament. The exercise was conducted in conjunction with a larger national leadership exercise involving the government, the Swedish Armed Forces (Försvarsmakten), the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB), the royal family, and members of parliament throughout the week.
– It is important that our central democratic processes continue to function even in difficult situations. Therefore, we need to practise. Ultimately, it is about always being ready so that we can always remain free, says Andreas Norlén, Speaker of the Swedish Parliament and Chairman of the War Delegation, in the parliament's press release.
The War Delegation consists of the Speaker and 50 members of parliament. It can, if necessary, replace the parliament if Sweden is at war or under threat of war. The members are appointed for each parliamentary term.
In a post on LinkedIn, Hanna Gunnarsson (V), a member of the Defence Committee and the party's defence policy spokesperson, highlights that it is a great responsibility to be part of the delegation. "It is, of course, very difficult to immerse oneself in different scenarios of how and what could happen, but it is incredibly important that we take the time to do this, practise, read up, think, and reflect," she writes.
