Sweden has entered into a security cooperation agreement with Ukraine. The agreement was signed by Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) and Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Stockholm. During a meeting, Zelenskyy emphasised the continued need for Gripen for Ukraine.
The agreement focuses on military support but also includes other areas, writes the Prime Minister's Office in a press release.
– Ukraine is fighting not only for its own freedom, but also for our freedom, said Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson in connection with the signing.
Sweden will continue to contribute to Ukraine's reconstruction, support the country's reforms and preparations for EU and NATO membership, and provide support to hold Russia accountable for crimes in and against Ukraine.
The signing took place at Rosenbad in connection with Zelenskyy's visit to Stockholm to participate in the Nordic-Ukrainian summit. The meeting was also attended by Finland's President Alexander Stubb, Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Norway's Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, and Iceland's Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson.
On X (formerly Twitter), the president writes that the agreement includes the provision of the radar reconnaissance aircraft S 100D (also known as ASC 890), as well as the possibility of supplying Ukraine with JAS 39 Gripen aircraft, including relevant training.
– I have spoken with Prime Minister Kristersson about Gripen aircraft for Ukraine. I want Ukrainian pilots to start training on Swedish fighter jets as soon as possible, as it will take a year before they are ready. If we start the training later, it might be too late, says President Zelenskyy during a press conference with the other leaders after the summit.
