Sweden has joined a multinational coalition to procure Patriot missiles of the GEM-T type, referred to by the Swedish Armed Forces as Robot 103 A. The collaboration, led by the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA), involves five countries and aims to meet an increasing need for air defense capability and strengthen Europe's defense industrial capacity.

According to the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), the procurement provides Sweden with a long-term solution for missiles for the Patriot system. “The acquisition strengthens the capability and endurance of the Swedish air defense while also contributing to the joint air defense capability within NATO and in Europe,” says Jonas Lotsne, head of FMV's Army Materiel division.

The coalition, which also includes Germany, the Netherlands, Romania, and Spain, encompasses the purchase of up to 1,000 Patriot missiles at a total value of approximately 60 billion SEK. Sweden's share of the project exceeds five billion SEK, which also enables the establishment of a new production line for GEM-T missiles in Germany. Previously, production was concentrated in the USA. Defense Minister Pål Jonson comments on the initiative: “Europe must strengthen its air defense. Sweden is investing over 5 billion SEK in this initiative, which not only strengthens our own air defense but also Europe's defense industrial base.”

According to the NSPA, the collaboration brings both cost savings and expanded production capacity in Europe. “This procurement offers economies of scale while simultaneously strengthening Europe's industrial capacity,” says NSPA's Director General Stacy A. Cummings.

The missiles will be manufactured by COMLOG, a joint venture between Raytheon and MBDA Germany. The company is responsible for expanding production capacity in Europe and has previously specialized in maintenance and logistics for Patriot missiles, operating the Patriot Missile Facility 3 in Schrobenhausen, Germany.

Air Force Chief Jonas Wikman describes the importance of air defense in today's security policy situation. “Air defense is a cornerstone of multidomain IAMD (Integrated Air and Missile Defense) and crucial for defending Sweden and our allies in today's complex operational environment,” he writes.

The joint procurement also includes component updates, spare parts, and test equipment for future maintenance, according to the Ministry of Defense's press release.
