The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) has ordered four Bofors 57Mk3 naval guns from BAE Systems Bofors. Deliveries are due in 2028 and 2029.

According to FMV, the new guns will replace the guns now fitted on some Swedish Navy ships. FMV did not name the ships. Neither FMV nor BAE Systems disclosed the contract value.

The order also covers Bofors 57 mm 3P ammunition, plus training and other services for bringing the guns into service. The 3P round is pre-fragmented and is programmed automatically in the barrel.

— The new guns and the programmable ammunition strengthen the navy’s ability to counter threats from, for example, both aerial and surface drones, says Olof Öhrström, head of FMV’s ship systems unit.

BAE Systems describes the 57Mk3 as a multirole gun for air defence, anti-surface warfare and naval fire support. The company says 3P ammunition lets it engage drones, aircraft, missiles and surface targets.

The order follows a joint Swedish-Finnish 3P ammunition order, which NDS reported in January.
