The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration has signed two separate agreements for artillery ammunition with a total value exceeding five billion kronor, announces the Ministry of Defence. The orders pertain to 155 mm shells and propellant charges for the Archer artillery system and represent the largest Swedish investment in artillery ammunition since the 1980s.

Agreement with Rheinmetall Denel Munition

FMV orders artillery shells and modular propellant charges from the Assegai family for just over four billion kronor. Deliveries will take place from 2025 to 2027 and will expand the ammunition that can be used in Archer.

– The ammunition provides a much-needed complement to meet the needs of the Swedish Armed Forces, says Jonas Lotsne, Head of the Army Division at FMV.

Framework Agreement and First Order with Nammo

A new framework agreement has been signed with Nammo Sweden AB. The first order, valued at just over one billion kronor, includes the 155 mm shell High explosive extended range (HE-ER) which enables firing distances of up to 40 kilometers; deliveries begin in 2028. The agreement is a continuation of the Nordic partnership agreement that Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Norway concluded with Nammo in June to ensure the region's long-term ammunition supply.

– With the framework agreement and a first order in place, we ensure that deliveries are secured as quickly as possible, replenish stocks, and increase the Swedish Armed Forces' endurance in combat, says Olle Oswald, strategic purchaser at FMV.

Minister of Defence Pål Jonson (M) describes the investment as a step to increase Sweden's and NATO's endurance:

– This strengthens the Archer systems and increases the defense's endurance with deliveries already this year, he says in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
