The government has decided to reopen Sweden's embassy in Lima. The embassy is expected to be operational by autumn 2026 and aims to strengthen bilateral relations, support Swedish companies on site, and promote trade and investment. The decision follows a year of increased contacts between Sweden and Peru.

– The relationship between our countries has strengthened and intensified in recent years. We have significant strategic interests in Peru. Several Swedish companies are active in the country, and their presence needs support, says Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard.

According to the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the decision is part of efforts to provide Sweden with the best possible conditions to conduct foreign policy and promote Swedish interests abroad, within the framework of available resources.

Previous dialogue on defence cooperation

In August, NDS reported that Defence Minister Pål Jonson received his Peruvian counterpart Walter Astudillo in Stockholm, along with the foreign ministers from both countries. The meeting was a follow-up to Jonson's South America trip in July, where he held bilateral talks in Lima and participated in the air show F-AIR Colombia, where two Swedish Gripen aircraft were showcased alongside the Brazilian Air Force.

During the meeting in Peru, possibilities for defence industrial cooperation were discussed, focusing on combat aircraft, cyber defence, innovation, and drone technology.
