Sweden Invests Over 5.3 Billion Kronor in Drone and Space Capabilities
Sweden is investing over 5.3 billion kronor in drone systems and space capabilities to strengthen the operational capacity of the Armed Forces and cooperation with allies. The investment includes unmanned systems and satellites, with deliveries planned between 2026 and 2028.
The Swedish government has decided to invest over SEK 5.3 billion in drone systems and space capabilities for the Swedish Armed Forces (Försvarsmakten). The decision was announced on 12 January 2026.
In the government's press release, it is stated that more than SEK 4 billion is allocated for the procurement of various types of unmanned systems for the combat units of the Swedish Armed Forces. The investment includes loitering munitions, reconnaissance drones, unmanned airborne systems for electronic warfare, and unmanned vessels for maritime applications. Deliveries of these systems are planned for the period 2026 to 2028.
The government further states that SEK 1.3 billion is being invested to strengthen Sweden's space capability through the acquisition of reconnaissance and surveillance satellites. According to the press release, approximately ten additional satellites will be procured, with deliveries from 2026 to 2028. The investment is described as the next step in the development of Sweden's military space capability, following the launch of Sweden's first military satellite in 2024.
– "Unmanned systems and space situational awareness are crucial in modern warfare. By investing in drone capabilities and space systems, we strengthen the operational capability of the Swedish Armed Forces, increase the resilience of our combat units, and improve our ability to operate alongside allies," says Sweden's Minister of Defence, Pål Jonson, in the press release.
The government indicates that the investments are financed within the framework of the SEK 25 billion for so-called opportunity procurements approved by the Swedish Parliament (Riksdagen) in connection with the spring budget amendment in 2025.
