The agreement aims to deepen cooperation in defense materiel, development, innovation, and the defense industry.
– The new letter of intent on military-technical cooperation takes our already close cooperation further, says Defense Minister Pål Jonson in a press release from the Government Offices.
Poland's Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz also emphasizes that the agreement means increased cooperation between the countries' armed forces and industries.
– This means new capabilities, new skills – the best cooperation, he says in a press release from the Polish Ministry of Defense.
Sweden has contributed with JAS 39 Gripen and personnel to NATO-led air defense missions in Poland during 2025. The missions include both airspace surveillance and protection of logistics nodes related to support for Ukraine.
In November 2024, Sweden and Poland entered into a strategic partnership focusing on security and defense. The agreement includes, among other things, strengthened military cooperation in the Baltic Sea region, joint development of defense technology, and support for Ukraine. The partnership also entails a joint commitment to counter Russian security threats, including measures against sanctions violations and hybrid influence.
The defense industry is highlighted as a priority area in the new letter of intent, with ambitions for joint research, innovation, and development of new technology. Swedish defense companies have in recent years signed several extensive agreements with Poland, several of which Försvarssektorn Nyheter has reported on.
Saab has received orders for Carl-Gustaf recoilless rifles including ammunition and training equipment in a contract worth 12.9 billion SEK, as well as two radar surveillance aircraft of the Saab 340 AEW type for 600 million SEK. Additionally, two signal intelligence ships are being built for approximately 6.7 billion SEK, and Bertin Exensor has delivered its Flexnet ground sensor system valued at 40 million euros.
