Sweden and Brazil have signed a bilateral action plan for deepened cooperation in trade, innovation and defence, among other areas. The signing took place as the two countries celebrate 200 years of diplomatic relations.
On 5 August 2026, Sweden's Minister for Foreign Affairs Maria Malmer Stenergard met her Brazilian counterpart Mauro Vieira in Brasília to sign the updated action plan for the two countries' strategic partnership. According to the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, this took place during Malmer Stenergard's visit to Brazil.
"Brazil is Sweden's largest trading partner in Latin America, and we have extensive cooperation, particularly in defence. The action plan deepens our cooperation in trade, innovation, research, higher education, the green transition and environmental issues," said Maria Malmer Stenergard, Minister for Foreign Affairs, according to the press release.
The press release describes Brazil as one of the world's largest democracies and a growing global actor.
Following the visit to Brazil, the Minister for Foreign Affairs travelled on to Cali, Colombia, to take part in the presidential inauguration of Abelardo de la Espriella, where further bilateral meetings were held.
