Sweden is now integrated into NATO's defense planning and participates in NATO's collective defense. This means, among other things, that Sweden is part of and contributes to NATO's force and command structure.
One of NATO's core tasks is to maintain NATO's integrated air and missile defense. NATO's air surveillance, Air Policing, is part of this. NATO Air Policing, just like the Swedish national air surveillance, is ongoing continuously and aims to preserve the integrity of NATO's airspace and act as a deterrent against attacks in the air domain.
The government confirms in the press release that Sweden is now taking the next step as a NATO member by deciding to contribute aircraft to NATO's air surveillance. It will primarily be F17 in Ronneby that will contribute to NATO Air Policing, and the Swedish contribution will perform the tasks from a base in Sweden, primarily in the Baltic Sea area.
