Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) and Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk signed the agreement at Harpsund highlighting the shared need to address the security threat posed by Russia's aggression against Ukraine.
Kristersson describes the cooperation as a central part of efforts to enhance security in the Baltic Sea area. Closer cooperation on security and defense in a broad sense is the cornerstone of the renewed strategic partnership between Poland and Sweden. We intend to jointly work to strengthen security in the Baltic Sea region and address the threat posed by Russia, says the Prime Minister.
The partnership aims to strengthen military presence in the Baltic Sea region, improve NATO cooperation, and develop joint defense capabilities. Among other things, Sweden and Poland will work to optimize NATO's forces and defense plans and deepen cooperation on cyber defense and hybrid warfare. The countries have also agreed to work together to maintain sanctions against Russia and counter opportunities for sanctions compliance violations.
The defense industry is highlighted as an area where Sweden and Poland see potential for deeper cooperation. Initiatives include joint research, innovation, and development of defense-related technologies.
Swedish defense companies have signed several extensive agreements with Poland in recent years. Saab has delivered Carl-Gustaf grenade launchers including ammunition and training equipment in a contract worth 12.9 billion kronor, as well as two radar surveillance aircraft of the Saab 340 AEW type for 600 million kronor. Additionally, two signal intelligence ships are being built for approximately 6.7 billion kronor, and Bertin Exensor has delivered its Flexnet ground sensor system valued at 40 million euros.
The partnership also confirms the countries' joint commitment to support Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity. This includes continued military support, training, and economic assistance. Sweden and Poland also express support for Ukraine's long-term Euro-Atlantic integration.
