The Finnish Security and Intelligence Service (SUPO) has completed the three-year project Intelligence Analysis and Research Suite (INTER), which aimed to develop new analysis and research tools based on artificial intelligence.

According to SUPO, the project has resulted in a desktop application for the agency's analysts and researchers. The system makes it possible to collect, classify and analyse data from various sources and formats with AI support.

In a press release from SUPO, the tools are stated to strengthen the agency's ability to identify security threats, understand large volumes of data and produce situational assessments. By automating parts of the analytical work, the system is intended to reduce the amount of manual labour and streamline analytical processes.

SUPO also states that the AI-based analysis can help detect connections and weak signals that might otherwise risk being overlooked during manual data processing.

The project ran for three years and had a total budget of approximately four million euros. The EU's Internal Security Fund (ISF) co-financed the initiative with 2.8 million euros. During the course of the project, staff were also trained in the use of the system.

SUPO states that the results are evident in areas including more efficient work processes, improved analytical quality and positive feedback from users.
