The government wants Swedish students to learn more about Sweden's total defense and the role of NATO. Minister of Education Lotta Edholm (L) emphasizes the importance of students having knowledge about total defense issues and NATO in light of the changed security situation and Sweden's entry into the defense alliance in a press release from the Ministry of Education.

Starting from the fall semester of 2025, the subject of social studies for high school students will include questions about total defense and NATO. Students will learn about Sweden's total defense, international law, and the significance of foreign and security policy for interstate relations, including NATO's role. At the same time, the possibility of including similar knowledge in the elementary school curriculum is being investigated, writes the Ministry of Education.

The ongoing assignment of the Curriculum Inquiry includes assessing whether teaching about total defense and NATO should be included in the elementary school curriculum. Currently, there are no specific requirements for this in the elementary school curriculum. The assignment is to be completed no later than February 28, 2025.

– Several statutes and regulations concerning the school's role in the event of a crisis, threat of war, or war are not fully adapted to how the education system is organized today. Among other things, independent schools and preschools are not covered by these provisions, says Lotta Edholm in the press release.
