Saab and Scania France have jointly signed a contract with the French procurement authority Direction générale de l'Armement (Directorate General of Armaments) for the delivery of Giraffe 1X radar systems and the development of a solution using Scania tactical vehicles for the French armed forces.
According to a press release from Saab, the contract covers 17 Giraffe 1X radar systems. One radar will be used for testing and evaluation, while 16 will be installed on Scania V3P chassis, a tactical vehicle developed by Scania France and the company's division SPAD (Scania Public and Defense) in Angers, France. The contract also includes spare parts, training and support. Saab and Scania France have formed a joint consortium for the duration of the contract. Deliveries of the radar systems are scheduled to take place between 2026 and 2027.
"We are proud to be working together with Scania France on this important contract, with the aim of modernising short and very short-range air defence capabilities for the French armed forces," says Carl-Johan Bergholm, Head of Saab's business area Surveillance, in a press release from Saab.
Saab states in the press release that the Giraffe 1X is a compact 3D radar system already under contract and in service with a number of customers. According to the company, the radar system can be used for air defence, counter-unmanned aerial systems (C-UAS), protection of buildings and installations, and has naval applications for most types of vessels. Saab further states that the Giraffe 1X is software-defined and can be continuously upgraded to counter new types of threats.
