Saab and Helsing have conducted the first test flights with an AI agent integrated into a JAS 39 Gripen E. The flights, which took place at the end of May and the beginning of June, are part of the FMV-funded project Beyond, which is included in Sweden's future combat air studies.

During the test, the aircraft was able to autonomously perform maneuvers in a Beyond visual range combat situation using the AI agent Centaur. It also provided instructions to the pilot to fire weapon systems, according to Saab. A second Gripen aircraft was manned to simulate an opponent, while a safety pilot in the AI-controlled aircraft was ready to take over control if necessary.

– We have quickly both integrated and successfully test-flown Helsing's AI in Gripen E, says Peter Nilsson, Head of Advanced Programs at Saab, in a press release from the company.

The collaboration between Saab and Helsing was announced during the defense exhibition DSEI in September 2023, when Saab also invested in Helsing and became a co-owner of the company. The collaboration includes the development of AI functions in several domains, including aviation, sensors, and command systems.

– This is the future of air combat, here and now in Europe, says Marcus Wandt, test pilot and Head of Innovation at Saab, in Helsing's press release.
