With the support of the Swedish and British governments, Saab has submitted its bid in the procurement of new submarines for the Netherlands. Saab's proposal consists of four expedition submarines in collaboration with the Dutch shipyard Damen Shipyards Group, according to a press release from Saab on 28 July.

Saab and Damen Shipyards Group have been collaborating since 2015. The company states that the proposal is a collaboration between the Netherlands and Sweden. The offer also includes the transfer of knowledge from Sweden to the Netherlands. The submarines will be fully maintainable by the Dutch navy and can be upgraded on-site in the country throughout their lifespan.

- The unique capabilities of the expedition submarine C718 both meet and exceed the needs and requirements of the Netherlands. Our offer constitutes a significant contribution to the operational capability of the Dutch defence, and cooperation with local industry will ensure strategic independence for the country. These are Dutch submarines for the Dutch navy, says Mats Wicksell, Senior Vice President and head of Saab's business area Kockums in the press release.

Their offer is based on a modular design with capabilities and technologies that enable continuous upgrades of new technology, ensuring that the submarines maintain their capability for many years to come.

Saab's bid includes an integrated and proven weapon system as well as one of the best sensor systems in the world. Saab's innovative low-signature design minimizes the risk of detection by sonars and other sensors. All together, this results in a difficult-to-detect and highly capable submarine, the company writes.
