The news was presented by Minister for Civil Defence Carl-Oskar Bohlin and Minister for Infrastructure and Housing Andreas Carlson at a joint press conference on Gotland.
- The current port solution does not meet the needs we see in a deteriorating security policy situation. A reserve port is of great importance, not only for Gotland's and national needs but also in an international context as Sweden gains NATO membership, says Minister for Civil Defence Carl-Oskar Bohlin in the ministry's press release.
The Swedish Transport Administration is tasked with analysing the conditions and assessing the costs for reserve port capacity for Visby port on Gotland. In carrying out the task, the Swedish Transport Administration shall consult with the Swedish Maritime Administration, the Swedish Armed Forces, the Swedish Fortifications Agency, the County Administrative Board of Gotland, Gotland Municipality, and the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency, as well as gather opinions from other stakeholders within the maritime sector. The Swedish Transport Administration shall report the assignment no later than 30 November 2023.
- Those who live and work on Gotland depend on the Visby port being accessible year-round, and currently, there is no good alternative if it cannot be used. This is a limitation that is unsatisfactory, not least for preparedness reasons and to ensure that socially important activities connected to Gotland can be maintained, says Minister for Infrastructure and Housing Andreas Carlson.
