The Government Appoints Henrik Landerholm as National Security Adviser

The government has appointed Henrik Landerholm as Sweden's first national security adviser to strengthen the country's security policy coordination. Landerholm has an extensive background in defence and diplomacy.

The Government Appoints Henrik Landerholm as National Security Adviser
The government states on its website that Sweden is facing the greatest foreign, security, and defence policy challenges in modern times. Therefore, Sweden's security policy actions must be coordinated, and Sweden's crisis management must be organised to reflect today's complex threat landscape and risks. The government therefore intends to establish a national security council within the Prime Minister's Office.

Today, the government appoints a national security advisor, who is initially tasked with proposing how a function within the Prime Minister's Office should be developed for the coordination, direction, and analysis of issues related to national security. The security advisor will consider what organisational structure and competencies are needed to fulfil the mission in the most effective way. The government appoints Henrik Landerholm to the role of national security advisor.

– I and the rest of the government are very positive that Henrik Landerholm has accepted the position as Sweden's first national security advisor. We are now living in a time where many different threats can be directed against Sweden. This requires more from the collective ability to analyse and coordinate efforts against national security threats, says Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.

Henrik Landerholm is currently the Director General of the Swedish Psychological Defence Agency. He began his career in the army in 1983 and is currently a lieutenant colonel in the reserves. He has previously been a Member of Parliament and Chairman of the Defence Committee, a member of the Defence Commission, and the rector and head of the Swedish Defence University as well as Director General of the Folke Bernadotte Academy. From 2011 to 2021, he served in the foreign service and led the combined Swedish effort in Northern Afghanistan for two years, after which he was Sweden's ambassador to Latvia and the United Arab Emirates. Since 1999, he has been a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of War Sciences and the Royal Society of Naval Sciences.
