The government proposes increased resources for a military innovation programme and expanded research in the defence sector to strengthen Sweden's ability to meet future threats. The government proposes SEK 88 million in 2024 for a military innovation programme and research under the auspices of the Swedish Armed Forces, as well as SEK 100 million for expanded research activities at the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI), writes the Government Offices in a press release on 6 September.
– To manage military growth, Sweden needs to continue to be a leader in technology development, research, and innovation. The increased allocations to FOI represent an increase of over 35% from 2023. The rapid technological development is driven not least by research and companies outside the defence sector. We are now providing resources that create the opportunity to capture and utilise emerging technologies for military use, says Defence Minister Pål Jonson, in the press release.

– It is becoming increasingly difficult to draw a clear line between civil research and defence research, especially when it comes to new and emerging technologies. Thus, there is also great potential in strengthening synergies and collaboration benefits between civil and military research, innovation, and technology development. The state-funded defence-related research, which mainly consists of applied research, has a significant dissemination effect to other research areas. FOI's research has, for example, greatly contributed to increased knowledge and understanding in the current security policy situation, says Education Minister Mats Persson.
