2025 was a record year for Denmark's Home Guard. The number of volunteer soldiers increased by 43 percent compared to the previous year, marking the largest growth in total strength since the Cold War.

The Home Guard in Denmark experienced a record level of interest in voluntary service during 2025. A total of 2,314 individuals were recruited, representing an increase of 43 percent compared to 2024 when 1,613 individuals joined. This makes 2025 the year with the largest growth in the Home Guard's strength since 1983. According to a communiqué from the Danish Home Guard, the recruitment peak occurred during a year marked by the war in Ukraine and increased international tensions.

Major General Gunner Arpe Nielsen, head of the Home Guard, expresses joy over the increased interest among volunteers. He also emphasizes that the role of the Home Guard has developed significantly.

– Previously, we could say that we supported the Danish Defence. Nowadays, the Home Guard is an integrated part of Denmark's total defence. The goal is to continue the development that took place during 2025, says Arpe Nielsen in the press release.
