Yesterday, Sweden's Minister of Defence, Pål Jonson, was in Warsaw, Poland, for a meeting with other defence ministers from the Northern Group, as Försvarssektorn Nyheter previously reported. On the same day, the Polish embassy tweeted that Poland and Sweden are in advanced negotiations to purchase reconnaissance and command aircraft.

The tweet in question quotes Poland's Minister of Defence and Deputy Prime Minister, stating that the countries are in advanced and detailed negotiations to acquire reconnaissance and command aircraft from Sweden. He further mentioned that he believes the negotiations will be concluded shortly.

Quote: I wanted to say publicly for the first time that we are well advanced in terms of acquiring early warning aircraft from Sweden. Detailed negotiations are already underway. I believe it will be successfully completed within a short time.

It is not specified which aircraft is being referred to, but it is assumed to be Saab's new AEW&C aircraft, GlobalEye. AEW&C stands for "Airborne Early Warning and Control". The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) signed an agreement with Saab to purchase two of these aircraft last summer, with an option to order two more in the future. Saab states on its website that GlobalEye consists of a radar with a range of more than 550 kilometres, several advanced sensors, and a command system. This provides reconnaissance and command capabilities in the air, as well as over sea and land, and can send information to various units.

In February, Saab announced that they had submitted a response to a Request for Information (RFI) to NATO's procurement organisation regarding the new generation of reconnaissance and command capabilities. Carl-Johan Bergholm, head of Saab's business area Surveillance, stated in Saab's press release that GlobalEye is developed to meet NATO's needs and requirements.

Poland has made many large procurements in the defence sector since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine last year. In November, Saab signed a contract with the Polish procurement authority to deliver two signal intelligence ships, with delivery in 2027. The construction of the first hull began at a Polish shipyard last month.
