In an article on the Swedish Armed Forces' website, it is stated that the plan is for Sweden and Denmark to alternately share the responsibility of establishing a battalion as part of a brigade based outside Riga. The Danish and Swedish troop contributions will relieve each other on a semi-annual basis. The Swedish contingent will consist of a mechanised battalion starting no earlier than 2025.
– We have begun planning for this, and assuming a decision is made, we are prepared to carry out the task, says Colonel Lennart Wideström, commander of P 7, in the article.
The Southern Scania Regiment, P 7, is the unit designated to be first on site following Swedish NATO membership, with a troop contribution of approximately 600 personnel, consisting of employed soldiers and officers, mainly from the 71st Battalion, writes the Swedish Armed Forces.
– This will be one of the initially most visible contributions from the army to NATO's collective defence and a task we take very seriously. Just as the ability to receive military support in Sweden when needed is crucial, so is the ability to provide military support beyond our borders for our future role in NATO, says Army Chief Jonny Lindfors.
