After nearly 50 years, the royal orders of knighthood will be awarded to Swedish citizens for exceptional contributions. Nominated by the public and selected by the council of orders at the Royal Orders of Knighthood, the government has now approved the names, and H.M. The King has formally decided on the awarding of the orders. Among them, the Royal Order of the Sword is awarded to Lieutenant General Dennis Gyllensporre and Colonel 1st Class Ulf Henricsson, writes the Royal Court and the Government Offices in press releases.
The Royal Order of the Sword was established in 1748 and is awarded to military personnel. Following a parliamentary decision, the royal orders were put on hold from 1975 for Swedish citizens.
The process for Swedes to once again be eligible for royal orders was initiated in 2018 through a committee initiative in the Committee on the Constitution. In December 2022, the government decided on a new regulation regarding Sweden's foremost awards for meritorious contributions, with broad support in parliament.
Lieutenant General Dennis Gyllensporre receives the Royal Order of the Sword, Commander Grand Cross, for exceptional leadership under war-like conditions in Mali. Dennis Gyllensporre was in command for three years of over 13,000 personnel from 60 countries involved in the MINUSMA mission in Mali.
Colonel 1st Class Ulf Henricsson receives the Royal Order of the Sword, Commander 1st Class, for exemplary leadership under war-like conditions in the former Yugoslavia. Ulf Henricsson was nicknamed "The Sheriff of Vareš" during his time as battalion commander for BA01 in the UN force Nordbat 2 in Bosnia.
The awarding ceremony will take place at the Palace on 31st May.
