The Nordic defense ministers have signed a revised Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) within the framework of the Nordic defense cooperation NORDEFCO. The new agreement, signed on May 6, 2025, in Rovaniemi, is reported by the Finnish Ministry of Defense in a press release.
– We are strengthening Nordic defense with a renewed NORDEFCO document. It enables rapid reinforcement of our joint defense and military security supply, says Finland's Minister of Defense Antti Häkkänen.
The agreement establishes the purpose, structure, and goals of the cooperation. Among the goals are to strengthen deterrence and defense in the Nordic region, promote common strategic understanding, and enable coordinated military operations. The MoU also clarifies that the cooperation should complement and contribute to NATO's collective defense, while considering the commitments of the participating countries within the EU and EEA.
Defense Minister Pål Jonson (M) participated in the meeting in Rovaniemi on May 6–7, which FSN previously reported on.
The new agreement replaces previous MoU documents from 2009, 2021, and 2022. It is valid indefinitely and allows participating countries to leave the cooperation with twelve months' notice.
