During exercise Bold Quest 2026 in Michigan, Norway sent targeting data from a Norwegian-developed Valkyrie drone swarm to a US HIMARS unit, the Norwegian Armed Forces said on 5 October. The chain crossed several national networks and classification levels in real time.
The data went from Michigan home to Norway. From there it passed through another country's fire support system and back to the US. British forces passed the final fire mission to the American HIMARS unit. The test was simulated and used no live munitions.
— We succeeded in testing the entire link from Norwegian drone to HIMARS, said Oda Motrøen-Sevilhaug, who led the Norwegian contribution.
She said the result confirmed that the concept works. Norway also used an automated program to manage sensors and effectors in real time.
Bold Quest is a testing and experimentation event led by the US Joint Staff. This year it was held at the Air National Guard training centre in Alpena and on the Grayling range. Around 1,300 personnel from 19 NATO and partner nations took part. Norway sent about 50 people, including 23 from the Cyber Defence Force.
— The most important thing is that we identify the weaknesses, Motrøen-Sevilhaug said.
