The Norwegian government has presented a proposal to the Storting (Norwegian Parliament) to expand the ongoing submarine programme with two additional submarines, according to a press release from the Norwegian government.

The proposal means that Norway, in addition to the four submarines already ordered from German thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (tkMS), will acquire a total of six new submarines. Two of the previously ordered submarines are under construction, and the first is planned to be delivered to the Norwegian Navy in 2029.

– Submarines are absolutely central to the defence of our country. They are indispensable for being able to monitor and deter in our surrounding areas, says Defence Minister Tore O. Sandvik in the press release.

The government proposes that the budget for the submarine programme be increased by 46 billion Norwegian kroner. The cost increase is justified by rising prices of defence materiel, the need for additional weapon systems and modernisations, as well as adjustments related to exchange rate developments. Norway is also co-financing a new production line in Germany to enable faster construction.

– It is an expensive investment, but also an important investment in the security of Norway in a turbulent time, says Sandvik.
